Where the lack of command of a language is often a barrier between people, sign language neutralizes these differences. Each of the children portrayed depicts a word in sign language. On their own these words and photographs do not have a meaning, but together, they form a context: a certain ordering of the photographs produces a sentence or a proverb. Even in our language a series of proverbs have become established of which few people know the real origin. Who knows, for instance, that “Unknown, unloved” is of Indonesian origin? There are...
